Parametrised planning, semi-automated execution and assembly of steel structures

Unger completes around 100 steel construction projects every year at more than 50 locations worldwide.

Unger Steel Construction has state-of-the-art, digitally controlled machinery, operated by highly-qualified employees. This enables maximum throughput volumes of 70,000 tonnes of steel every year, in as short a time as possible.

All of Unger’s processes are digitally supported throughout. This means that all processes, from coordination with customers to raw materials orders and assembly of finished components, are digitally modelled and reproduced.

This process, the lifeline of steel, can be roughly represented in three sections.

Every building starts with a shared vision

Integrated realisation at Unger

At Unger, interaction with our customers helps to create a building from geometric fundamentals. The first step is to establish the unknown parameters. Once the information is agreed, it provides the basis for integrated realisation (digitally controlled processes from raw material through to assembly) at Unger Steel Construction. Integrated realisation means a multi-layered feedback process between the architectural model and construction model, between digital modelling and physical conditions on site. Central tools to support this are Building Information Modelling (BIM) and, closely connected, semi-automated production, manifests and assembly concepts from Unger Steel Construction.

BUILDING INFORMATION MODELLING

The digital twin – the DNA of your building

At Unger Steel Construction, your building is created as a 3D model containing all production-relevant data. It’s what we call a ‘digital twin’, which not only helps to visualise the building, but also serves as a reference for feedback processes and measurements.

This digital twin, the BIM model, supports the entire construction process – from ordering of raw materials to production and fitting of the very last screw.

 

Three decades of experience in BIM planning

Unger has been using BIM since around 1989, although back then, its functionality was fairly limited. Since then, around 50 design engineers, 20 project managers, 5 structural engineers and 20 assembly foremen as well as the entire production management team have started to use Building Information Modelling.

PARAMETRIC MODELLING

Parametric modelling to scale the order volume

Unger Steel Construction uses parametrised geometry, or macros (templates), in the planning phase. These are used to automatically generate individual components and their node connections within a wider context This way, larger order volumes can be realised efficiently and within short planning periods.

Planning (statics)

The execution and adjustment of building geometry, the final design, takes place in close coordination with our customers using digital 3D models.

Production – semi-automation and manufacture

This model serves as the basis for the production, or the steel making, of your project. From digital information to the building part!

Assembly

Digital assembly concepts created in advance enable generation of chronological manifests using BIM-supported component selection.

Our methods for monitoring deadlines

All internal processes are digitally recorded and controlled in our own ERP system.

The requisite databases are controlled via BIM based on cumulative construction schedules of all simultaneous projects.

The Unger Identification Code (UIC) allows you to identify every element created at Unger, and therefore trace it back to the raw materials producer.

A web-based, internal wiki (digital encyclopaedia) enables access to the knowledge available at Unger at any time, from factory standards to performance declarations.
